Bowen Therapy was developed in the 1950’s by the late Tom Bowen from Geelong, Australia. He became a celebrated therapist, regularly treating over 13,000 patients each year. In 1974, he invited Oswald Rentsch and his wife Elaine to study with him and document his work. Honoring their promise to spread the message of Bowen Therapy, Ossie and Elaine began to teach the technique in 1986.
Since then, over 25,000 therapists worldwide have taken Bowen Therapy training. This is where it all started, all training is based on Bowtech, who introduced and continue to bring Bowen Therapy to the world. Dedicated to preserving the technique and ensuring that it is taught in its original form, Ossie and Elaine founded the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia in 1987.
Bowen therapy is safe to use on anyone from newborns to the elderly and produces lasting relief from pain and discomfort. The work consists of a series of fine and gentle movements on specific points on the body. The work is done on soft tissue and stimulates physiological changes & energy flow, empowering the body’s own resources to heal. Research shows that from the very first Bowen moves made on the lower body, the brain waves dip, allowing the body and mind to relax almost into sleep. Such relaxation allows the body to mobilize resources not normally available during our busy waking states. The moves also trigger the nervous system and body to make the adjustments to correct disorders.
A Bowen treatment consists of small moves at varying pressures, each at a specific site on the body. The treatment is pleasant – therapists use light, cross-fiber maneuvers of muscles, tendons or ligaments with no forceful manipulation. A treatment will typically last between 30 minutes and one hour. It can be provided through a layer of light clothing, although you may be asked to remove heavy or thick garments. During this time, the therapist may leave the room for changes to occur in your body before commencing the next sequence of moves.
During the treatment, the therapist will discuss possible side effects from the treatment that show that the body’s self-healing process is working. They will emphasize the importance of body hydration (drinking plenty of water) and will recommend any other exercise, environment or lifestyle changes necessary to maintain your well-being. In most cases, the patient can expect substantial relief after just the first session and significant resolution or recovery within three to five sessions. However, chronic or long-standing conditions or repeat injury may require additional treatments. Some clients have periodic Bowen therapy sessions to maintain body integrity and balance and to prevent the onset of problems.
It is strongly advised that you do not have any other physical therapy or other forms of manipulation- such as massage, chiropractic, physiotherapy, acupuncture or kinesiology- for one week after the treatment. These things may undo the balance achieved through the Bowen treatment.
For the first week after treatment, you should also:
- Avoid excessive heat or cold to areas that have been treated.
- Stop using an electric blanket or hot water bottle.
- Have lukewarm, not hot, baths.
Your therapist may also advise you to:
- Avoid sitting for any longer than 30 minutes on the day of your visit without moving around. Lying down is alright.
- Walk as much as possible for three days (at least 15 minutes a day).
- Drink as much pure water as is comfortable (at least five glasses a day) to help flush toxins from the body.
- Avoid stimulating substances like coffee (pain-killers and anti-inflammatory medications are okay, if necessary).
Reactions that may be experienced include hot and cold flushes, emotional releases, headaches and body aches. These reactions are a positive sign that the healing process is working.
